Nature lovers were thrilled to spot a platypus gliding through the waters of Obi Obi Creek – a reminder of how special the natural environment around Maleny Grove truly is.

Known as one of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland’s best places to see these elusive creatures, the tranquil waterway has become a hidden gem for those who have patience and a keen eye.

At Maleny Grove, our residents love to get out and about in nature and we always encourage them to slow down and enjoy the beauty that surrounds them.

The platypus, one of Australia’s most iconic and curious creatures, is notoriously shy and mostly active during dawn and dusk. They are totally unique, existing nowhere else in the world but Australia.

And that’s not the only wildlife you can spot when you live in Maleny.

Freshwater turtles are often found sunning themselves on rocks around the creeks, while kingfishers dart across the water and wallabies graze at the edge of the forests.

As well as the Obi Obi Creek, the nearby Mary Caircross Scenic Reserve offers stunning views of the Glass House Mountains and is home to over 130 species of birds including the vibrant Wompoo fruit dove and the elusive regent bowerbird.

For those who enjoy a peaceful bushwalk, the Rainforest Discovery Centre at Mary Cairncross is a must-visit, with its elevated boardwalk and educational displays about the local flora and fauna. Early morning walkers are often rewarded with the chorus of whipbirds, lyrebirds, and sightings of pademelons quietly emerging from the undergrowth.

Just a short drive from Maleny Grove, Gardner’s Falls is another scenic location where birdwatchers, hikers and photographers gather to enjoy the sounds and sights of native wildlife amid waterfalls and rock pools.
